A love letter for you

Dear Hallmark, Kodak, Helzberg and FTD,

You are hereby advised that your commercialization of the sweetest of human emotion no longer holds sway. Love doesn’t belong to you to sell, nor can it be found in a card, diamond, flower or box of chocolate for that matter. For this February 14th, I am temporarily renaming Kuhs Farm as THE LOVE FARM. Love appears and multiplies exponentially here. In every corner it can be found, in every creature, every breath, every glance and every moment.

Every other day of the year I am Farm Girl, but for today I am.the Queen of Hearts and here is a list of things I love:

  • My collection of gorgeous size 8 ½ shoes, flashy heels and boots, in every color and variation, style, heel and toe and especially the careless manner in which I would give them all away for a good pair of muck boots
  • My love of cooking that has been thrown by the wayside because daylight is too precious to waste and if it’s dark, you might as well get in bed (now you know you’re a farmer)
  • Two wonderful kids who dont think I’m a total wackjob for the things I get us into
  • My love of sleep balanced by my childlike enthusiasm to get up as soon as a picture of what I can do in a day dances through my early morning head
  • Eternal optimism and generosity even in the face of disappointment, because all it takes is one good block, stacked on another good block, followed by another until something wonderful is built
  • The random and wonderful way the Universe brings the right people into your life at the right time, still leaving enough subtlety so that the more people share; it feels like puzzle pieces fitting together
  • The way it feels to be able to spend entire days outside, with no particular distaste for either heat or cold, because regardless of what you think now, you would trade any office or cubicle to know by heart exactly where the sun will land on any day throughout a year, because you know its path so well
  • The look in a creatures eyes when you can meet its gaze and feel a bond of trust, regardless of either of your size
  • Doing something every day, and working hard, not because it will make you rich, but because it makes other people happy and it is the right thing to do
  • The way I have such good friends that they scrape and clean stalls without asking….it is like having a surprise birthday party every weekend
  • How gorgeous our farm fresh chicken eggs really are, the color, the variety, patterns, shape and most deliciously, the taste. Not only are the beautiful chickens our works of art, but their eggs are like visiting the museum gift shop with a free coupon
  • The way you can love a goose that thinks it’s a pitbull
  • When you are peaceful with yourself, strangers are simply friends you haven’t met yet
  • My wonderful neighbors that want us to succeed so much, that they come over and lend a hand to make up for the crappy next door meanies who write letters about how all the wonderful press and joy next door is ruining their serenity
  • Looking around one day and realize that no matter where I go, a pack of crazy farm dogs have elected me their Cesar. I have a Pupperazzi
  • The taste of a tomato you have watched from a bump on a branch to a succulent ripe fruit, and the way it feels to eat it seconds after picking, without washing, because you have kept it safe and clean throughout it’s growth
  • The way the chickens make you feel like a rockstar if you so much as head towards their house…..I imagine it is how the dwarves felt when Snow White returned to their cottage….the warmest of welcomes and little smiles on little faces all happy to see you
  • Not having taken so much as a real formal riding lesson, but having the generosity of a herd that lets me get away with no formal education, only the ability to coo and pet and feed and love, and that is enough to hop safely on any back and ride
  • The crazy way I actually want to grow a field of Arugula to roll around in and munch leaves like a drunk cow
  • Handwritten mail and people who still send notes and thank you cards when it is easier and cheaper to send an email. Your parents taught you well. It is an honor to receive a gift of your thoughtfulness and time
  • The love of the greatest friends anyone could ever dream up, whom despite the poly species poo they must walk through to visit, come out week after week without fail to always fall prey to my random farm vortex and the farm time that follows them deep into their city lives
  • The way it feels to have a pet goat crawl in your lap for help in giving birth to their first offspring
  • The wonderful men and women, boys and girls that work here, on even the foulest of days and still thoughtfully ask me if there is anything else I need help with and still ask me if I want a soda from the gas station. How can a girl be so lucky?
  • The sunlight rising on the backside of the gazebo each morning, igniting each leaf and petal with heavenly perfect light
  • The history and potential of a piece of land that inspires the best in me and everyone that walks upon it
  • How every friend that comes out here has actually warmed up to milking a goat
  • The way that 13 dilapidated and failing buildings have been transformed into a kingdom that is all I could ever want or dream
  • The magic light that fills the stall of the barn as if it were leaked out of heaven itself
  • The blessed life I lead and the gift of getting to work with and be paid by clients I am happy to call my friends.
  • The sunset and tranquility that ends each perfect day, one after another, with a show of color and magic that can’t be found anywhere else I know

And most importantly……

Knowing that if ever anything happened to me, there are people who esteem it as much as me that would ensure not only its survival, but its continued love and appreciation

To all the animals, life and friends that find peace and majesty in this place I love, You are and always will be my daily Valentines.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Love,

Luli

  1. Oh, geez. This is effing AWESOME! Loved the whole thing, but these two made me particularly smile:

“My love of cooking that has been thrown by the wayside because daylight is too precious to waste and if it’s dark, you might as well get in bed (now you know you’re a farmer)”

“The way that 13 dilapidated and failing buildings have been transformed into a kingdom that is all I could ever want or dream”

We had an old building we couldn’t salvage (rotted support beams on every front) so we stripped the wood and used it for siding on a new building. I mourned the loss of that failing building, but celebrate its new life every morning! Happy non-commercial, farm-style Valentines Day to you and your family!!!
